Keep Calm, and Collaborate

In stressful times, collaboration is often the breath of fresh air we need

By Paul Milindi, Representative

Breathe.

That’s something I’ve had to remind myself of many times over the past year—just breathe. And I know I’m not alone. Many of us have felt the weight of uncertainty, the pressures of a changing economy, global tensions, and the challenges of balancing work, family, and personal well-being. These stresses don’t remain outside the job site gates. They travel with us each day and shape how we experience our work and our relationships.

During my visits to sites and in countless conversations with members, I’ve heard the same concerns echoed: the need for stability, respect, and fairness in how decisions are made and work is carried out. Recently, I visited a work site where that uncertainty was especially visible. The slowdown in the condo market across the Lower Mainland had many members worried about their future with the company.

When I first arrived, the atmosphere was tense and conversations were understandably emotional. I, too, became emotional and tense, and had to remind myself to breathe. Members were frustrated and anxious, unsure of what the coming months would bring. But as we began to talk openly and identify the root of those concerns, the tension started to ease.

Together, we discussed practical ways to navigate the slowdown, one of which was connecting affected workers with CLAC’s Training, Apprenticeship, and Jobs Team, which can assist members in finding future employment opportunities. What began as a difficult meeting turned into a constructive dialogue where we worked together toward solutions, and it was a real reminder that collaboration and communication can turn even the toughest moments around.

Meaningful progress doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes collaboration. Whether it’s between workers and management, among contractors, or across different trades and teams, when we approach challenges together, with openness and mutual respect, we create solutions that benefit everyone. Collaboration is a principle we live by at CLAC. It shapes how we negotiate, how we resolve issues, and how we strengthen the workplaces we share.

My commitment as a representative is to continue fostering that spirit of collaboration. I will keep representing your interests at the bargaining table, supporting your safety and well-being on the job, and advocating for workplaces where every voice matters.

So take that moment to breathe, pause, refocus, and remember that you are part of something larger. That you are part of a community that stands together through uncertainty and builds strength through collaboration. We achieve the best results when we listen to one another, value each contribution, and work side by side.
