Tuesday, March 24, 2026 July 1 Is Closer Than It Looks A firm cutoff looms for volunteer firefighters. Make sure you’re properly certified Ontario Emergency Services Emergency Medical Services July 1, 2026, is fast approaching, and for Ontario fire departments it is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a hard compliance deadline. Under Ontario Regulation 343/22, departments must ensure firefighters perform listed fire protection services only if they hold the required certification, unless a limited exception applies. The regulation came into force on July 1, 2022, with many of the services listed in Table 1 requiring compliance by July 1, 2026. For volunteer departments, this deadline directly impacts core duties, including exterior and interior attack, auto extrication, operations-level hazardous materials response, team lead roles, pump operations, fire prevention and inspection, fire investigation, public education, and training officer roles. Ontario recognizes certification issued by the Fire Marshal, as well as equivalent IFSAC or Pro Board accreditation. This is not just a training milestone. It is a firm cutoff. After July 1, 2026, firefighters who are not properly certified may not be permitted to perform certain duties. If you are behind on required certifications, facing barriers to training, or unsure you will meet the deadline, act now. Do not assume it will sort itself out. Speak with your fire chief or deputy immediately. Your union steward or representatives can also raise concerns with the employer, push for access to training, and help address scheduling or workload issues before time runs out.
