Sunday, December 5, 2021 In the Midst of Difficult Times, We Find out What We’re Made Of As we see many projects on the horizon—and a lot of reasons for optimism in Saskatchewan—I encourage you to be intentional about these things as we all continue working through challenging times as coworkers and members of Local 151 Newsletters Saskatchewan Local 151 By Ryan Timmermans, Regional Director, Saskatoon Member Centre Whether it be at work, home, or within society at large, there continues to be no shortage of polarizing topics creating division and hard feelings. Within the union world, we have gone from one hot button issue to another—from site shutdowns to quarantines to mandatory vaccine policies. Nothing has been simple, anxiety has been high, and patience is running thin. We have been tested as individuals, teams, and organizations. But it is in the midst of difficult times that we find out what we’re made of. I recently heard someone say that we are defined by how we treat each other. There are those who make you feel good when they enter the room and those who make you feel good when they leave. Many of us work in teams and hopefully get along most of the time. But as individuals, it’s worth remembering that in every interaction we have, we either give another person life or drain it. As we see many projects on the horizon—and a lot of reasons for optimism in Saskatchewan—I encourage you to be intentional about these things as we all continue working through challenging times as coworkers and members of Local 151. 5 Things to Keep in Mind Value each other’s work and ideas. Appreciate the different roles it takes to get the job done and value your coworkers’ contributions. Value each other’s time. Value each other’s skills. Value each other’s humanity—look for common ground that connects, rather than focusing on disagreement. Now that we have moved into 2022, let the new year be a time where we look forward, feel hopeful about the future, and continue to encourage each other in the midst of challenging circumstances. Much peace to you and your families as we begin the new year.
