Haldimand Hospital Service Employees Vote Overwhelmingly in Favour of New Collective Agreement

DUNNVILLE, ON—Service employees at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital in Dunnville, Ontario, voted 92 percent in favour of ratifying a three-year collective agreement providing them with annual wage increases and other improvements.

The approximately 100 employees, who work as technicians, aides, clerks, mechanics, electricians, nursing staff, and other occupations, are represented by Grand River Valley Healthcare Workers Union, CLAC Local 305.

The new contract provides employees with three percent annual wage increases over the term plus several special adjustments to various occupations: $2 per hour for ward clerk and admitting clerks; $1 per hour for IPU and ER clerks, PSWs, RPNs, and electricians; and $0.50 per hour for physiotherapy assistants. The ward clerk top rate goes from $26.67 to $31.33 per hour by 2027—a 17.5 percent increase. The top rate for RPNs goes from $37.07 to $41.60 per hour—a 12.2 percent increase. In addition, several improvements were made to employees’ benefits plan, including the introduction of a basic health spending account. The new agreement also provides increases to the evening shift premium, from $1.31 to $2.26 per hour, and the night-shift premium, from $1.31 to $2.98 per hour.

“We thank our members for showing their support by voting yes to the settlement,” says Susan Schmalz, an RPN, steward, and member of the union bargaining committee. “We look forward to working together under the new contract.”
