Fonzie’s Local 56 Connection

Canadian soccer sensation Alphonso Davies not only has humble beginnings, but he also has a connection to CLAC Local 56. His father, Debeah, is an employee at the Maple Leaf Foods plant in Edmonton.

Debeah and his wife, Victoria, and their three children fled war-torn Liberia during the Second Liberian Civil War. Alphonso, the oldest child, was born in a refugee camp in Ghana in 2000. The family came to Windsor, Ontario, in 2005 as refugees and then made their way to Edmonton a year later.

Alphonso was quickly recognized for his amazing soccer-playing ability. By the age of 15, he had signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer. It’s there that he got the nickname Fonzie. Three years later and he was signed with FC Bayern Munich—one of the top teams in the world—in a multimillion dollar deal.

Alphonso is not only recognized for his soccer talents but also for his humble, fun, and caring spirit—a testament to the loving upbringing of his parents who endured through incredible circumstances to give their family a better life. Debeah and Victoria supported and encouraged their son to pursue his soccer dream. But most of all, they taught him to be a good person.
