Final Two Bargaining Units at Nason Ratify Contracts

Edmonton—The employees working in the Construction (Commercial and Industrial) and the Service Divisions of Nason Contracting Group Ltd. have ratified their respective collective agreements. These are the final two divisions in the company to approve their renewal agreements.

This also ends a process that began in the summer of 2017, when Local 63 sought individual certifications from the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) for the separate bargaining units working for Nason. Up until then, all employees worked under one collective agreement. Nason, since their employees first joined Local 63 in the 1990s, was a niche construction contractor that worked on new, replacement, and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment plants in western Canada, using an on-site fabrication facility to assist their projects.

In 2017, Nason began a concerted effort to expand their scope of work. Since then, Local 63 has completed the ALRB certification process for the following four groups of employees:

Nonconstruction bargaining unit that covers all employees who perform service work or renovation and maintenance work;
Construction bargaining unit of various trades working in the industrial and commercial sectors across Alberta, including those still working on water and wastewater treatment plants;
Nonconstruction bargaining unit that covers all employees working at their fabrication facility in Nisku;
Maintenance bargaining unit performing maintenance work on industrial facilities.

Employees working in the first two groups recently voted to approve new collective agreements covering their scope of work, joining their fellow members who approved contracts earlier this year. All of these collective agreements run until the beginning of 2021.
