Tuesday, February 20, 2024 Empowering Indigenous Communities through Construction CLAC Training in Saskatchewan started a great program allowing 12 Indigenous students to enter the construction world Newsletters Saskatchewan Local 151 The program started on January 8, 2024, and will continue for approximately six months. We started the project with renovating a band office in Muskowekwan, and students finished in three weeks doing an incredible job. In the beginning of February, students moved to Kawacatoose to renovate four houses for the local community. In the beginning of March, the program will continue with building four Tiny Houses. Every community of Touchwood tribal council will have one house in Day star, Kawacatoose, Muskowekwan, and George Gordon. This initiative goes beyond just renovation or building. It’s about showing local communities talent, effort, and tireless work of program participants. Through hands-on training and mentorship, students not only learn construction work, but they also gain essential teamwork and leadership skills. By renovating and building new houses, students are fostering a sense of pride and unity among residents. Improved infrastructure enhances the aesthetics of the community and contributes to a sense of ownership. For many participants, this program represents a pathway to a brighter future. They will get safety tickets and employability skills at the end of the program, which will prepare them to pursue careers in the construction industry.
