Direct Support Professionals Overlooked in Manitoba’s Latest Wage Benefit

WinnipegThe Manitoba government today announced the launch of the Caregiver Wage Support Program, which will funnel $35 million in much-needed funds to front-line caregivers in homes, shelters, child welfare, and other sectors.

However, representatives from CLAC, an independent labour union that represents direct support professionals (DSPs) in the province, are concerned that the terms of the program do not address many workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are pleased to see the government support front-line caregivers with a $5 hourly wage top-up,” says Nathan Koslowsky, CLAC representative. “Unfortunately, this program completely excludes direct support professionals who are caring for vulnerable Manitobans in day programs around the province.

“DSPs are on the front lines caring for people with disabilities every day. These low-income front-line workers remain integral in supporting the province’s pandemic response and exemplify true professionalism and courage while caring for Manitobans.”

In response, CLAC is calling on Minister of Families Heather Stefanson to extend the wage increase to DSPs working in day programs across the province.

It was exciting to see a wage top-up being offered to the sector but disappointing to learn that DSPs are not included,” notes Janette Dyck, CLAC steward and day program DSP. “During these difficult times, we have many additional responsibilities on top of our usual workload and are definitely putting ourselves at risk.”

CLAC will continue to advocate for these essential workers and the important work that they do in Manitoba’s residences.
