Wednesday, March 7, 2018 Dangerous Work Newsletters Sectors Healthcare What job in BC has the highest risk of workplace injuries? No, it’s not construction, logging, or mining. According to WorkSafeBC, healthcare assistants in BC have the highest number of reported injuries. “We’ve seen an 11 percent increase in the last five years—from 2,961 time-loss claims in 2012 to 3,274 in 2016,” says Stephen Symon from WorkSafeBC. The most common injuries reported are from overexertion, acts of violence, slips, trips, and falls—many of which seem to happen on a regular basis. WorkSafeBC’s website has tons of links to health and safety information and resources for those who work in healthcare and social services, from patient handling and violence to slips, trips, and falls. If you have any questions, speak to a member of your health and safety committee or contact your CLAC steward or representative. On April 28, we remember those injured or killed on the job and those suffering from an occupational illness. See more at clac.ca/dayofmourning.
