Construction Craft Worker Apprenticeship Program

CLAC is pleased to partner with Thomson Rivers University (TRU) for a unique training experience: helping inmates get job ready.

TRU launched the five-week Construction Craft Worker Apprenticeship program for inmates at Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre in 2016. The partnership between the School of Trades and Technology and BC Corrections has students taking Level 1 Construction Craft Worker (CCW) course, with both classroom and practical work, equipment operation, traffic control, construction safety training systems certification, and occupational first aid certification. Students also develop teamwork and other skills needed to gain employment in the construction industry.

All students who pass the CCW Level 1 apprenticeship exam, administered by the Industry Training Authority, are one step closer to receiving their Red Seal certification in that trade.
CLAC sponsors the inmates’ training and proudly attends the successful students’ graduation ceremonies. We also help connect the graduating students with work after release via the CLAC Jobs website and CLAC Training, BC. Students who do not initially pass the exam are given help and tools to make improvements.

“We want students to continue in the trade, complete the next level of training, get their journeyperson designation, and obtain long term employment,” says Larry Richardson, CLAC Training Director, BC. “BC is facing a skilled labour shortage, and we’re working to equip more people to this highly rewarding profession.”
