CLAC is committed to supporting the growth of Ontario’s construction sector by inspiring youth to discover and gain hands-on experience in the skilled trades Ontario Construction Construction One of the primary entry points for high school students into the construction trades is the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Each year, CLAC presents $1,000 awards to students enrolled in construction trade apprenticeships who are working toward becoming certified journeypersons. Up to five students will be selected for these awards, which are available to those who have completed or are in the process of completing a cooperative education placement in a construction-related trade through Edvance OYAP for independent schools. In addition to the bursary cheque, each student was gifted a custom DeWalt backpack along with a variety of accessories and tools. Here are the five winners of the CLAC Edvance Skilled Trades Bursary for 2025. Congratulations! Carson Faber Electrician, London Christian High “Carson was punctual, respectful, and worked well under supervision,” says Jordan Bakker, HR manager at Pro Electric Inc. “He demonstrated a willingness to learn and asked thoughtful questions to deepen his understanding of electrical systems.” Cole Faber Electrician, London Christian High “What stood out most was Cole’s willingness to learn and take initiative,” says Jordan Bakker, HR manager at Pro Electric Inc. “Whether it was asking informed questions about the Ontario Electrical Safety Code or taking the time to organize tools and materials efficiently, he consistently showed maturity and professionalism.” Ryan Lammers Sheet Metal Worker, Hamilton District Christian High School “Ryan joined us every day, all day, from September to January of last year,” says Ken Welmers of Bill Welmers and Sons Heating & AC Inc. “He was always punctual and contributed in a positive and productive manner. We are looking forward to having him start full-time employment with us when he graduates high school in June.” Naaman Milton Carpenter, Nimbus Christian Education “Naaman is focused, hard-working, and a definite fit for the trade of carpentry,” says Ronald Holland, cooperative education teacher at Nimbus Christian Education. “To hear Naaman speak of the new things he’s learned in his carpentry work is to realize he is truly living his dream.” Mya-Lynn Ruxton Electrician, Maranatha Christian Academy “Mya-Lynn is an admirable student who thrives in many areas,” says Johanna Van Rooyen, cooperative education teacher. “She has found her passion in the electrical field and looks forward to continuing with it after graduation in June.” 5 Key Benefits of Getting Involved with OYAP For employers, it offers access to a pipeline of motivated, career-focused youth eager to begin their apprenticeship journey.
