Friday, March 2, 2018 Clients and Workers Will Suffer from Government Homecare Agency News Sectors Healthcare Late last year, CLAC had the opportunity to speak with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care about the creation of a new agency. The new agency, Personal Support Services Ontario (PSSO), would recruit, train, and employ personal support workers (PSWs) and provide care to a small group of homecare clients. Various existing homecare agencies have since taken legal action to prevent the government from creating PSSO. The coalition of 11 not-for-profit and for-profit homecare providers worry the move will have “dire consequences for patients and their families, for service providers and their employees and for the homecare and healthcare systems at large.” CLAC represents many PSWs who provide homecare services in Toronto, London, and Brant-Simcoe-Haldimand-Norfolk. In January, CLAC submitted a letter to former Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Eric Hoskins, about the significant impacts on the homecare sector likely to be caused by this agency, such as precarious work scheduling and unpredictable earnings, and the risks involved in clients as employers and a province-wide bargaining unit of homecare workers. The government has not considered all of the implications of their changes and seems committed to forging ahead. If the government follows through on the creation of PSSO, clients receiving homecare and those providing it would both suffer, and CLAC will continue to fight for solutions that actually put patients and their caregivers first.
