Wednesday, November 6, 2024 Cleared to Work A project for the Canadian Navy required security clearance. The CLAC Jobs Team helped make it happen Locals Local 68 Newsletters BC Local 68 Four years ago, CLAC-signatory contractor Pomerleau Inc. was crewing up at the Esquimalt Navy Base for the “B” Jetty project. As part of the ongoing recruiting process, the company hired workers (carpenters, crane operators, labourers, and welders) and then applied for national security clearance for them to be able to work on the project. Because obtaining clearance would take two to three weeks, the prospective employees couldn't wait that long without employment and moved on to other jobs. Enter the CLAC Jobs Team. They took on the challenge to prescreen members through the security process. With the help of sponsorship from Pomerleau, and much work with the federal government, CLAC Jobs was able to take over the process and get interested individuals processed prior to them being hired. The cost was covered by CLAC Jobs or the member and was reimbursed by Pomerleau once they hired someone. Fast forward to today and Pomerleau is just now crewing up for the second half of this project for the construction of “A” Jetty. Work on this project should be completed in late 2028.
