CLAC Welcomes Federal Approval of the Trans Mountain Project

Locals Local 63 Local 68 News Sectors Construction

Langley, BC—CLAC welcomes yesterday’s announcement by the federal government cabinet approving construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline (TMX). Work on the project is expected to begin this year.

“Meaningful Indigenous consultation and a thorough environmental review are critical steps in gaining approval for any major energy project in Canada,” says Kevin Kohut, CLAC BC director. “We commend the federal government for taking the time to do it right.”

Local 68 and Local 63 members are slated to build 75 percent of the pipeline project running from Edmonton through to Burnaby, BC.

“For our members, this is great news,” says Kohut. “We have had a lot of interest from members looking to work on this project, many of whom were already working on the pipeline last year before the delay.”

CLAC is committed to working closely with its signatory companies to promote training opportunities and skill development for local workers in the communities along the path of the pipeline. Emphasis will be placed on hiring and training Indigenous people, women, and youth.

“This is a great day for British Columbians and for all Canadians,” says Kohut.
