Monday, April 23, 2018 CLAC Training Corner: Ontario Local 6 Local 52 Local 53 Newsletters The CLAC Training Team in Ontario coordinates health and safety training, skills-based training, preapprenticeship programs, apprenticeship reimbursement programs, and the ever-growing CLAC Jobs Ontario program. We marked our first full year in the new Cambridge Member Centre in 2017, where we now have centralized administration of training, jobs, and apprenticeship member services. The deadline for the rollout of the Working at Heights program was the focus of the team for 2017. Our training team had a record year in 2017. The program oversaw the delivery of 9,266 certificates, including nearly 3,500 Working at Heights certifications. As well, 172 apprentices received their tuition reimbursements for attending trade school. We have a lot to look forward to in 2018, with program development, enhanced apprenticeship services, and the piloting of a digital certificate/mobile credentialing app for smart phones for our top 10 courses. Stay tuned! Working at Heights (WAH) Refresher Training Is Coming! The CLAC Training Team is preparing for the launch of the CLAC Working at Heights refresher training program. As per the province’s working at heights training program standard, all CPO-approved working at heights training remains valid for three years from the date of successful completion. Refresher training is achieved by successfully completing the Working at Heights practical module (3.5 hours) delivered by an approved training provider. Successful completion of the refresher training will revalidate a learner’s working at heights training for another three years. Once per quarter, CLAC Training produces a company-specific, six-month expiry report and will contact each employer to develop a recertification plan for active employees. Refresher training courses will be listed on our national course calendar (clac.ca/courses). Members who are not working for a CLAC employer at the time of their WAH expiry will receive a direct email from the CLAC Training Team reminding them of their upcoming expiry and refresher options. CLAC Jobs Ontario CLAC Jobs Ontario helps connect workers with employers and employers with workers. To learn more, please go to clac.ca/ONjobs. Apprenticeship – CLAC-PAT Leadership Award Winners CLAC awards the Leadership Award to one student at each Pre-Apprenticeship Training Institute (Cambridge) graduation. The winner is chosen by PAT Institute instructors based on their employability score, which includes attendance, participation, personality, time management, work-site awareness, health and safety, teamwork, and leadership. Bawi Hnir, Carpentry Program: Bawi consistently showed leadership by not only role modelling an eagerness to learn but also role modelled the simple daily tasks and responsibilities of cleaning up every day after class. Luke Bader, Plumber Pre- Apprenticeship and Gas Technician Program: Luke demonstrated the qualities of a leader throughout nine months at PAT Institute. He had a positive attitude and his positive energy motivated others in the class. He led by example and encouraged and supported others.
