CLAC Staff Shaping the Skilled Trades

Across the country, CLAC staff are involved in various government and industry boards that seek to promote the skilled trades. Two of these individuals include Phil Polsom, representative, and Sarah Harris, CLAC Training Ontario workforce development and stakeholder engagement coordinator

Phil has served on both the Saskatchewan and National Skills Canada boards of directors for many years. He is currently the chair of Skills Saskatchewan and treasurer for the Skills Canada national executive committee. Skills Canada exists to engage youth in skilled trades and technologies careers and is most well known for its provincial and national skills competitions.

“I have been involved with Skills almost from the start of my employment with CLAC,” says Phil. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to commit time to such an amazing organization. Working with amazing people at both the provincial and national level is incredible, and to see the passion and support for the young people in the trades helps to inspire my work.”

Sarah Harris was recently appointed to the Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) Industry Advisory Committee (IAC), which offers insights and expert advice to STO’s leadership regarding apprenticeship initiatives.

STO was established in 2021 under the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development to oversee apprenticeship and trades certifications in the province. Its stated goals are to improve access to services, promote careers in the trades, and address the labour shortage. The IAC provides insights from those involved in apprenticeships to help STO reach these goals.

Kudos to both Phil and Sarah for the recognition of their hard work in shaping the skilled trades!
