CLAC Defeats LIUNA Bid to Represent Weston Construction Employees at Edmonton LRT Project

Local 63 members voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining with CLAC and subsequently ratified a new contract with near unanimous support

EDMONTON—Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 63, is proud to announce a decisive victory in a recent representation vote, reaffirming its position as the union for approximately 120 labourers employed by Weston Construction Alberta Ltd. These members are currently contributing to the construction of Edmonton’s west LRT line—one of the city’s major infrastructure projects.

The vote followed an application by the General Construction Labourers, Local 92 (LIUNA), to the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) seeking to replace CLAC as the employees’ bargaining agent. In the board-supervised vote, 81 percent of workers voted in favour of continuing their representation with CLAC Local 63.

“We honour the democratic right of every worker to choose the union that best represents their interests,” says Ryan Timmermans, CLAC Edmonton regional director. “We’re thrilled that these employees once again placed their trust in us. Their choice reflects confidence in our proven track record of fair representation, collaboration, and strong workplace advocacy.”

Members working on the site recently voted nearly unanimously (98 percent) in favour of ratifying a new collective agreement. The three-year contract will provide increases to wages, retirement savings, and employer-paid benefits coverage.
