Celebrating Success at Joint Labour-Management Meetings (JLMs)

Discussions at JLMs play a crucial role in fostering transparency, accountability, and constructive collaboration

One of the ways your union represents you is bringing issues of concern to management at regularly scheduled meetings. JLMs are fueled by collaboration, insights, and shared commitment to progress.

There are many kinds of workplace concerns, including urgent things that should be dealt with through the formal or informal grievance procedure, and there are things that need to be sorted out at bargaining. Most other things end up at the labour-management table.

Here are four common concerns that can be addressed by JLMs:

  1. Information sharing – Does the union know enough about key aspects?
  2. Absenteeism management – How is management handling employee absenteeism? Is it consistent? Is it based on the employer’s policy?
  3. Relationship with management – Do the employees have a clear understanding of management decisions? Do they have enough input?
  4. Safety – Does the health and safety committee meet regularly, and are they following the legislation to make the workplace as safe as possible?
