Building Communities Winners!

Three Manitoba organizations received donations as part of CLAC’s Building Communities program.

Baby Layette Love, in Niverville, received a $2,500 donation. The organization was nominated by Local 306 member Bonnie Sookermany, who is employed by Hanover School Division.

“Baby Layette provides a ‘baby shower in a bag’ for moms in need,” says Bonnie. “These bags include diapers, clothing, blankets, wipes, soothers, bottles, toys, socks, shoes, and some items for the mother. The bags go to the Winnipeg chapter of Crisis Pregnancy Centre in addition to being distributed locally. Where there is a need, this organization covers it.”

South Central Cancer Resource, in Morden, received a $1,000 donation. The organization was nominated by Local 306 member Beverly Wall.

“Having recently been diagnosed with cancer, this resource has been invaluable to me,” says Beverly. “They provide so much—wigs and head coverings, travel to appointments in Winnipeg, discounts at some local businesses, snacks during treatment, and so much more. These are just some of the ways they've helped me!

The Bunker Youth Ministry, in Winkler, received a $2,500 donation. The organization was nominated by Local 306 member Crystal Heinrichs, who is employed by the Garden Valley School Division.

“This group is amazing,” says Crystal. “They help our youth, guiding those who would otherwise feel unsafe and alone, and giving them a lasting support system, a purpose, and a place in the community. CLAC’s donation will help the organization to continue to advocate for the next generation.”
