Tuesday, September 16, 2025 Big Nursing News in Ontario! We’ve got exciting news to share—and it’s good news for long term care staff, PSWs, and nurses across the province Ontario Healthcare Healthcare The Ontario government announced a major investment of $56.8 million to help train 2,200 more nurses across the province by 2029. This is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthen the province’s healthcare system and make sure more qualified, compassionate people—just like you—are working on the front lines. What Does This Mean? 1. More Nurses in the System – Whether in hospitals, long term care homes, or community health centres, Ontario is looking to boost the number of nurse practitioners, RNs, and RPNs. 2. Opportunities to Upgrade – PSWs and RPNs can now take new online training programs to upgrade their qualifications. That means easier access to education without needing to leave your job—or your community! PSWs can take online courses to become RPNs. RPNs can study online toward a bachelor of science in nursing degree. These flexible training options are perfect for busy, working healthcare members looking to advance their careers. Bonus Investment in Practical Learning There’s also an additional $7.5 million to help colleges and universities purchase new lab equipment and training supplies. That means better practice tools for students and a better start to their careers. Why It Matters to You At CLAC, we know many members are already PSWs or RPNs working in long term care. These new investments mean better staffing levels in long term care homes across Ontario; more chances for you to upskill or pursue nursing without giving up work; and a stronger, more supported healthcare team—with you at the heart of it!
