Bargaining Updates

Canucks Sports & Entertainment – The union bargaining committee met with the employer in early February to begin negotiations. Local 501 members who work at Rogers Arena have told us that they are looking for a contract that offers wage increases to address the rising cost of living. After emerging from the pandemic restrictions that reduced the NHL season and caused the postponement or cancellation of many concert events in 2020 and 2021, business has resumed to more normal levels and members have returned to work.

Two public sector collective agreements in healthcare have recently reached tentative settlements and are in the process of being ratified. The union bargaining associations in both cases are strongly recommending acceptance of the settlements.

The Health Services & Support – Community Subsector Association (CBA) reached a tentative agreement with the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) in January. The tentative agreement Includes annual wage increases over a three-year term, with the first increase retroactive to April 1, 2022. Other highlights include premium increases for weekend, evening, and night shifts; an additional day of paid vacation for regular employees each year; and improvements to transportation allowances and language to address recruitment and retention.

The collective agreement covers approximately 21,700 healthcare support workers employed in a variety of community settings, such as private homes, group homes, residential community living homes, supported employment programs, child development centres, adult day programs, mental-health centres, community service agencies, and health authorities throughout the province. CLAC is one of eight unions that comprise the union bargaining association, representing members at Buena Vista Lodge in White Rock.

The Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA) reached a tentative agreement with members of the Community Social Services Employers’ Association (CSSEA) in early February. The tentative agreement has a three-year term with annual wage increases with the first increase retroactive to April 1, 2022. A number of other highlights include improvements to health and welfare benefits, leave provisions, and transportation allowance.

The collective agreement covers approximately 20,000 unionized employees working at private, group, and residential community living homes; supported employment programs; child-development centres; adult day programs; mental health centres; immigrant settlement programs; counselling for victims of sexual abuse; and crisis intervention programs in communities throughout the province. CLAC is one of eight unions that are members of the union bargaining association (CSSBA), representing members at Bethesda Christian Association and Communitas Supportive Care.
