Sunday, February 28, 2021 Apprentice Changes Newsletters Manitoba Local 152 Sectors Construction The Manitoba government has made changes to the apprenticeship regulations that are now in effect. The minimum ratio of apprentices to journeypersons was 1:1 and is now 2:1. Apprentices in their final level of apprenticeship training will not be included in ratio calculations in trades with at least three levels. Apprentices in their final year of apprenticeship training in trades with at least three levels no longer need to be directly supervised by a journeyperson as long as the apprentice has access to a journeyperson by telephone while performing a task. While these changes will allow employers to apprentice additional workers, this weakening of the apprenticeship program may negatively impact worker safety as well as reducing opportunities for apprentices to work directly alongside and learn from journeypersons. CLAC is reaching out to government and contractor partners to discuss these concerns.
