Wednesday, November 4, 2020 Appreciation for Members on the Front Lines A pandemic is full of heroes. Local 306 are those heroes Locals Local 306 Newsletters Manitoba Local 306 By Geoff Dueck Thiessen, Regional Director Here are just a few examples: • Save-On-Foods – Working the check-out, helping anxious customers, constantly sanitizing, and keeping up with online orders. Grocery workers are keeping us safe and supplied! • School division support staff – Behind the scenes, with lower pay and less attention than teachers, are the support staff who make sure it can all happen. Bus drivers, administrative assistants, library technicians, educational assistants, and custodians are very much on the front lines. Every week I hear stories of people on the breaking point, constantly dealing with changes to duties, rules, and information. • Direct support workers (DSWs) – Working with some of society’s most vulnerable adults with disabilities, DSWs are constantly managing boundaries in the workplace while trying to keep supported individuals safe as we know they may be more vulnerable to the virus. Appreciation in a newsletter isn’t enough. This pandemic is showing us that some of our most important workers are not valued enough. CLAC is working on this, and some of these solutions are not quick fixes. But right now, today, we need to recognize Local 306 workers as heroes!
