Monday, March 2, 2020 Alberta Budget Has the Right Focus: Job Creation Preparing workers for career transitions is key in the fast-changing job landscape News The government of Alberta tabled its 2020-21 budget on Thursday, February 27. It features a “Blueprint for Jobs” with $200 million budgeted to support research and innovation, and to attract talent in areas such as artificial intelligence, aviation, tourism, and financial tech. With high unemployment rates in Alberta, CLAC believes that job creation is the right focus. “The job landscape is changing quickly," says Dennis Perrin, prairies director. "We are pleased to see that the Alberta government is working with job creators, unions, and related parties to prepare Albertans for workforce, industry, and career transitions. “Without the right focus, people may not be ready for the right jobs. We need to develop and administer fiscally responsible training and employment programs that are informed by market needs and gets Albertans back to work.” CLAC is also pleased to see a capital plan for infrastructure that includes spending on roads, bridges, hospitals and other critical services. This is expected to create 3,000 additional jobs and ensures that the Alberta government is keeping up with the needs of the growing population. According to a recent BuildForce Canada news release, approximately 41,000 tradespeople will retire in Alberta between now and 2029. “Across the country there’s a looming shortage of skilled trades workers, and we anticipate that Alberta will be no different in the next few years,” says Perrin. “The Alberta government is preparing the right workforce and working with key partners, including underrepresented groups such as women and Indigenous communities.” Previous Next You might be interested in Why We Work Safely 5 Jun 2026 Standing Your Ground, and Staying Steady on the Job 4 Jun 2026 CLAC Partners with Alberta Government to Advance Skilled Trades Training and Accelerate Certification 4 Jun 2026 Strathcona Mechanical Workers Ratify New Agreement Providing Wage, Scheduling Improvements 3 Jun 2026
