Sunday, February 28, 2021 2021—A Year of Opportunity You may think that with COVID-19, the hit to oil prices in 2020, and the general economic uneasiness that has hung around in Alberta over the past few years, there might not be that much work coming up for Local 63 members in 2021. If you did think this, you’d be wrong! Newsletters Alberta Local 63 Sectors Construction CLAC is feeling bullish about work opportunities for you and your fellow Local 63 members this year. Below is a list of on-going and upcoming major projects and work for contractors working with Local 63. • Wind and solar farm work in southern Alberta with Borea Construction and PCL Energy (It is likely that between 500-1,000 Local 63 members will be employed at peak on renewable energy projects in southern Alberta in 2021.) • Various CLAC-signatory contractors, including Ledcor and Midwest, continue to build sections of the Trans Mountain pipeline in Alberta and BC in 2021 • Edson Cascade power generation project in Edson, Alberta, with PCL Energy • Pulp and paper plant expansion in Athabasca, Alberta, with PCL Energy • Pump station projects from Edmonton to Hope, BC, with Worley • Ongoing major construction work at the new IPL plant in Fort Saskatchewan with Kiewit Energy, Skyway, PTW, Brock, and PCL Energy • Commissioning and regular maintenance work at new IPL plant with Worley • Suncor South shutdown work with PCL Energy • DOW shutdown work with PCL Energy • TC Energy pipeline work around Grand Prairie with Midwest • Mining work with Nuna and Procon at the Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories • Mining work with Nuna at the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories • Major construction work of an iron ore mine on Baffin Island, Nunavut, with Nuna • AECOM now performing regular maintenance work at the following major plant locations in Alberta: Shell Scotford, Sun-cor Fort Hills, Kearl Lake, and Suncor Firebag • In the Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo area, Local 63 members with various companies are now performing regular mainte-nance and/or shutdown work at most of the major oil and gas plant locations. New possible construction projects also include the Long Lake project and work at the Suncor Base Plant. • The third and final phase of the West Calgary Ring Road will be built by TWI, starting in Spring 2021 and providing jobs for carpenters, labourers, concrete finishers, operators, and other trades. TWI also has other commercial and heavy civil work in and around southern Alberta. • The new Stoney Trail bridge in southeast Calgary over the Bow River will be constructed by PCL Builders. PCL Builders also continues work on other major construction projects such as the Calgary Cancer Centre hospital, the Airport Trail interchange project, and the BMO Centre expansion. • The Green Line LRT is the next mega infrastructure project coming up in Calgary. CLAC continues to monitor the status of this project to hopefully secure employment opportunities for Local 63 members once work is set to begin.
