Let My People Go!
In March 2003, almost 80 Cubans were arrested by their government, tried in two days, and sentenced to prison terms of up to 28 years. Their crimes? Involvement in human rights groups, attempting to form an independent trade union (CUTC), and journalism. The majority of these prisoners of conscience remain in squalid prison conditions, and many are in poor health. This imprisonment shows the complete absence of political and civil rights in Cuba.
The Christian Labour Association of Canada has been urging the Canadian federal government since 2004 to pressure Cuba to free these prisoners. Sadly, these men are now entering their fifth year in jail and Canada remains virtually silent. In fact, it has increased its trade and aid relationship with Cuba!
This campaign to Prime Minister Harper hopes to change Canada's foreign policy towards Cuba.
