Currently, in Ontario, billions of dollars are invested in infrastructure, and this investment continues to grow. Infrastructure development plays a vital role in society, and any disruption to services can be both dangerous and costly.
In 2023, there were 4,222 reported utility infrastructure damages in Ontario, a 12% decrease from the previous year. However, the most concerning statistic is that 61% of these damages occurred despite having locates in place. This highlights a critical gap in understanding, communication, and excavation practices within the industry.
While awareness campaigns such as "Call or Click Before You Dig" address the 39% of damages caused by a lack of locates, reducing the 61% of damages involving locates requires a deeper commitment. The Know Before You Dig training program was created to promote utility infrastructure awareness—ensuring workers understand the complexities of buried facilities and take ownership of safety.
The Know Before You Dig training program aims to address this issue head-on, empowering participants to proactively reduce risks and prevent damages when locates are in place.
This training program is recognized nationwide. There are two courses available, one for those of you who are working in Ontario only and one for those of you who are working in any other province outside of Ontario.
Duration: 4 hours

Non-member/public cost: $113
