Young Electrical Services Employees Secure Significant Wage, Pension Increases with New Contract

ESSEX, ON—Employees of Young Electrical Services Ltd., an electrical contractor based in Essex, Ontario, voted unanimously in favour of ratifying a three-year collective agreement providing them with significant wage and pension increases.

The company’s electricians are represented by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 53. The union has represented them since 2019.

The new contract provides employees with an 18.5 percent wage increase and 14.75 percent increase to employer contributions to their pension plan over the term. Employees will also benefit from the addition of two paid sick days, life insurance increases, and $40 per month toward the cost of their personal cellphone. In addition, all Saturday work will now qualify for overtime and forepersons will be provided with mandatory supervisory training.

“We had some difficult conversations, but in the end, we were able to come to something that the members were happy with, shown by the 100 percent vote to ratify,” says Mary Ellen VanderSluis, CLAC representative. “We look forward to continuing to serve our members at Young Electrical Services for the next three years and beyond.”
