#WomenWednesday - Yessika Garcia

Meet Local 68 member Yessika Garcia, a first-year carpenter apprentice with Technical Workforce Inc (TWI).

Tell us a little about yourself and your experience in the trades.
My name is Yessika Garcia, and I’m a Local 68 member. I’ve been working with Technical Workforce Inc. (TWI) for a little over two years as a skilled labourer and, more recently, as a first-year carpenter apprentice.

What made you interested in pursuing a career in the trades?
I’ve always been interested in hands-on activities, so I guess it was only a matter of time before I ended up in a trade. However, I never imagined myself as a carpenter!

Who has helped or inspired you along the way?
I’ve had many good coworkers, foremen, and superintendents during my time with TWI who have really taught me a lot and motivated me to keep going.

What is something you've learned about yourself since working in the trades?
Skills-wise, I didn’t know what I was capable of until I challenged myself.

Is there a project or accomplishment you're particularly proud of?
I remember making a jewelry box from scratch and even engraving my daughter’s name on it when I only had a few weeks of carpentry and tools experience.

If you weren't working in the trades, what do you think you'd be doing?
I might be a psychologist or motivational speaker because I like to talk, help, and encourage people.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in the trades?
There are going to be hard days, but you have to focus on the positive. The trades are a good opportunity to become more financially independent.

What could help women build and advance their careers in the trades?
It would be great to have more guidance and information from the beginning so you know how to advance and understand the next steps along the way.
