Could it be your body language that’s holding you back? Whether you’re aware of it or not, you’re continuously giving and receiving wordless signals when you interact with other people. All of these nonverbal behaviours—your gestures, posture, tone of voice, and eye contact—send strong messages. Your body language can either put people at ease or undermine what you’re trying to convey. These messages don’t stop when you stop talking—even when you’re silent, you’re still communicating. When it comes to communication, “you might be saying one or two words, but giving off thousands of nonverbal cues,” says body language expert and author Patti Wood. These nonverbal cues are crucial to any interaction, and they’re especially important to project the correct cues at work, she says.
