Saturday, March 1, 2025 Tax Deadline Is Getting Close! Did you know that the volunteer firefighter tax credit was increased for this tax season? Newsletters Ontario Emergency Services Sectors Emergency Medical Services As the deadline for this tax season gets closer, volunteer firefighters should remember that the federal government has increased the volunteer firefighter tax credit from $3,000 to $6,000. This change, announced in April 2024, effectively doubles the previous credit and provides additional financial relief for those who dedicate their time and effort to protecting their communities. The volunteer firefighter amount (VFA) was first introduced by the federal government in 2011. As of 2024, the VFA allows claimants to receive a 15 percent tax credit on up to $6,000 of eligible volunteer firefighter earnings, providing a maximum credit of $900 per year (an increase from the previous $450). To qualify, volunteers must demonstrate 200 verified hours of service within the tax year. While this increase is a positive step forward, our work isn’t done. CLAC has formally recommended that the Ontario government introduce and implement a provincial volunteer firefighter tax credit that matches the federal one. A provincial tax credit would provide even more support for Ontario’s volunteer firefighters, further recognizing the vital role you play in your community. We encourage all members to take full advantage of the federal tax credit and to stay engaged as we continue advocating for additional support at the provincial level. Every step forward, like this federal increase, is proof that our voices matter—but we must keep pushing to ensure fair recognition for the volunteer firefighters who serve their communities.
