STRABAG Employees Unanimously Ratify New Contract
Mississauga, ON—Local 52 members employed by STRABAG Inc., based in Mississauga, unanimously ratified a three-year collective agreement providing them with significant wage increases and other gains. The local has represented them since 2011.
The new contract provides $8.78 (13.8 percent) total package increase excluding premiums. The shift premium doubles from $2.50 per hour to $5, the foreperson premium increases from 7 percent to 12, and the lead-hand premium increases from 3 percent to 6 percent. The threshold for daily overtime decreases from nine hours to eight.
“The members employed by STRABAG are high functioning and hardworking electricians who work above and below ground on many of the GTA’s tunneling projects,” says Randy Parris, representative. The level of expertise and safe work practices that they require working underground ensures that they produce quality work and return safely to their families. The nuanced nature of tunneling and heavy civil work created challenges during negotiations. However, the new contract provides members with significant increases, while ensuring STRABAG is able to grow its workforce and remain competitive as they continue to improve infrastructure in the GTA.”
STRABAG Inc. is an electrical contractor specializing in road and railway tunnels, urban metro/underground rail tunnels, and tunnels/diagonal shafts and caverns for hydroelectric power plants.
