Monday, September 18, 2023 Steward Spotlight—Marie Durand Locals Local 152 Newsletters Manitoba Local 152 Local 152 member Marie Durand shares some thoughts about her role as a steward. Tell me about your work. I’m working on the St. Mary’s interchange project with Aecon Construction Solutions Inc. as a specialized labourer. While most of my time is spent on the traffic control team, I also enjoy running equipment when the opportunity arises! How do you view your role as a steward? My role as steward has helped me push my comfort with conflict. As a mediator, I’ve loved helping coworkers when asked and assisting in finding solutions to a variety of situations. What do you find satisfying about serving in this role? As someone who loves to help others, this role has definitely provided opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions with members to help further their goals! (I mean, aside from the constant questions about CLAC sweaters!) What is frustrating? Giving people answers I know they won’t like to hear when there’s nothing more I can do. You recently took Mental Health First Aid. What stuck with you about this training? Supporting someone does not mean giving them answers or trying to solve their problem. While options can be given for professional support if needed, ultimately, listening and asking engaging questions can be the best way to support someone!
