Sick Days: An Opportunity to Write to Your MLA or MP

Did you know that as a taxpayer and a voter you can approach representatives at any level of government to advocate for a cause that matters to you? For example, you could advocate for sick days for all to your local MLA or MP

Your union already supports you in advocating in this area with your employer, but there are some workers who do not have sick days. The union can amplify your message by lobbying the cause together with you, which will show your MLA or MP that this issue is important to a large group of people who are committed to making a difference.

By writing to your MLA or MP, you help bring attention to this issue and advocate for those who are forced to choose between their health and their job. Your letter could call on the MLA or MP to act by working with local businesses and even policymakers to develop a plan that would ensure that all workers get paid sick days.

3 Things to Highlight in Your Letter

  1. Explain the benefits of paid sick days for both workers and the community.
  2. Provide a personal example to show the difference that having sick days makes in a person’s life.
  3. Add your own suggestions for ways the government can resolve the issue to make all workers’ lives better.

This is only an example of one of the issues that affects workers. You could advocate for any other cause that matters to you.

Remember, your voice and advocacy can have a real impact on the lives of workers. When politicians hear from their constituents (voters), they take those opinions into account when making decisions.
