Save-On-Foods Team Members!

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Grievance Update

The federal government introduced a new federal statutory holiday for September 30, 2021. This day only applies as a statutory holiday for workplaces that fall under federal labour law and those workplaces where a collective agreement includes the day.

CLAC and Save-On-Foods were not yet in agreement about how our collective agreement language should be interpreted and took this matter to a mediator, who heard both sides, and is helping us reach an agreement. We filed a grievance and are close to resolving this!

Hours

We know the hours in stores have been managed to a point that might make business sense, but this is creating challenges for many team members. We have been discussing this issue at the with SOF at the highest levels. Here are a few things to remember:

•  Rest breaks still need to happen. If you are not able to take a rest break, tell a manager but also let your steward or representative know.

•  Free timing is not okay! Staying late only hides the problem and puts you at risk. If you are not authorized to be working, you may not be covered by WCB if you are injured.

•  Store culture. You still need to feel safe and respected at work. If this has changed, tell a manager if you’re able, and also let your steward or representative know.

•  Safety still matters! This includes taking the time to work safely and follow standard operating procedures. It also means the Workplace Safety and Health Committee in your store needs to meet and do store inspections regularly.

Mental Health

Many team members have been struggling with difficult challenges at home and at work, all in the context of the pandemic, and this impacts mental health. CLAC has been using our training fund to send managers and stewards to mental health first aid training so we can be more available to support this part of your work-life. Please remember that every team member at Save-On-Foods has counselling available through Homewood Health.

Did You Know?

Part-Time Team Members

Scheduling of hours will be done by seniority, limited by an employee’s availability, within the department(s) they are assigned. Part time team members will be permitted to limit their availability to work certain days of the week or hours of the day once they have completed their probation period.

Having issues with last-minute schedule changes!?

Step 1 – Ask the manager who wrote the schedule.

Step 2 – If you need support, or do not understand or agree with the answer given, talk to a steward or representative for support.

Review collective agreement Article 11 – Changes to your schedule

Your schedule may be changed without notice if there is an emergency.

It may be adjusted up to 24 hours to the start of the scheduled shift with reasonable notification from the employer.

Changes within the 24-hour period require mutual agreement between you and SOF. Managers should ask if last-minute changes work for you. Team members are able to decline if the change does not work for them.
