Redefining Humility—Humble Leaders Spark Ambition and Motivation

A study published last year in the Journal of Organizational Behavior discovered a previously undocumented benefit of humble leadership: it inspires others to be leaders.

Researchers Xiaoshuang Lin and Herman Tse studied 216 supervisor-subordinate pairs in China and surveyed 210 employers in Western countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the US. In an article in Harvard Business Review, they said “the results were eye-opening: Humble leaders who acknowledged their mistakes, valued their team’s contributions, and welcomed feedback significantly increased the workplace status of their employees, meaning they felt more respected and prominent within their organization, which in turn boosted their motivation to lead.”

The results were consistent across both China and the Western countries. The researchers found that humble leaders sparked ambition and motivation in employees, who felt more confident in their ability to lead. Employees were more willing to take on challenges and suggest new ideas.

The key, according to the researchers, was that humble leaders’ behaviours signal respect and recognition, helping employees to gain confidence and a sense of belonging and importance. This led them to be more likely to take the initiative and pursue leadership themselves.

The researchers had advice for how managers can promote humble leadership.

4 Ways to Ensure Humble Leadership and Inspire Others

  1. Be self-aware. Admit mistakes and show appreciation for your employees’ contributions. Never take credit yourself, and celebrate team success.
  2. Foster a culture of humility. Be open in communication, and encourage employees to contribute without fear of judgment. Use internal awards and mentorship to help employees feel respected.
  3. Guard against self-interest. Humility can quickly turn to arrogance. Regular evaluations help employees stay grounded and self-aware. As employees move into leadership roles, they will continue to embrace humility.
  4. Show appreciation. Celebrate the humility of others, and emphasize it as an essential leadership quality vital to the success of the company or organization.

The researchers conclude that “humble leadership is more than a personal virtue; it’s a transformative and strategic tool that drives ambition and unlocks the leadership potential of employees. By redefining humility as a strength, leaders can inspire their team members to grow, innovate, and take on leadership roles.”
