Tuesday, November 3, 2020 Pomerleau Employees Build Innovative Tunnel Infrastructure Newsletters BC Local 68 Sectors Construction Local 68 members employed by Pomerleau Inc., based in Surrey, are currently involved in building a pressurized waste-water tunnel on Annacis Island, one of two such projects currently underway in BC. The tunnel is being constructed in place, using a unique tunnel-boring machine that required a specialized operator to be imported from France to carve out the tunnel. The walls are then sprayed with concrete as the tunnel is bored. The modifications to the plant and the tunnel have been designed to withstand even a major earthquake. The tunnel will be used to release treated waste water to the lowest layer of the river where it will be spread out over a broad area to minimize the impact on the environment.
