Ontario Construction: Local Board Updates

Local 6

The Board of Local 6 convened in October to review recent business. It has been a busy time for bargaining, and the board is also focussing on growing CLAC membership by spreading word of our union's benefits to people and groups who don’t have representation or are being poorly represented. The Board would like to encourage the Local 6 members to participate in a food drive for the coming Christmas season. You can drop off any canned goods or financial donations at the CLAC Grimsby Member Centre which will then go to the Grimsby Benevolent Fund. The Board is also looking for worthwhile causes to support in the future, so if you have a good cause please share with a board member or your representative. The Board hopes everyone has a very Merry Christmas season, and looks forward to serving Local 6 members in 2019.

 Local 52

The Board of Local 52 met on September 13. Local staff reported many successful organizing drives. We welcome new groups of employees from In2Deep Ltd., DGF Forming, and Matheson Constructors. Currently Local staff are working on 11 rounds of negotiations, of which two are renewals and nine are first collective agreements. Staff shared a review of the financials as well as the Training Report.  Invitations have gone out for the annual general meeting, which is scheduled for December 13, 2018 and will be followed by a board meeting.

 Local 53

At the fall board meeting, the members elected to the board selected executive positions for the Local for 2018-2019.  Harold Chordash, employed at Graceview Enterprises, continues to capably serve the Local as president.  Vice-president is Shelia Davis from VanRooyen Earthworks. Our treasurer is Brad Mead from Pro Electric, and our secretary is Dennis Preszcator from JMR Electric.

2018 was another year of steady growth in the membership and new workplaces. New workplaces added to the Local in 2018 include members employed at Camlis Electric, Shamrock Mechanical, Viewcon Construction, and three divisions of Sierra Group of Companies. The year ahead promises to be busy with several collective agreements at the largest workplaces represented by Local 53 coming up for renegotiation.

The Board is hosting the 5th Annual Indoor Golf Tournament on January 12, 2019 in Tecumseh. Proceeds support the local food bank in Windsor. All members of the Local as well as friends and family are welcome to participate.

The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled for January 17, 2019.  Should you have a matter that you would like to place before the board, please contact CLAC representative Roger Grootenboer.
