Local 53 has represented the company’s approximately 150 unionized employees since being certified by the Ontario Labour Relations Board in 2017. The new contract provides members with annual wage increases of three percent, four percent, and four percent, along with an additional 0.5 percent increase to the employer’s mandatory pension contributions. Members will also benefit from the introduction of a new health spending account—a first for the group—valued at $300 annually, with a one-year carryover option of up to $600. Other improvements include increases to boot, safety, and meal allowances and mileage reimbursement. In addition, shop mechanics will see a boost of over $500 to their annual coverall allowance. “This agreement reflects the commitment and unity of our members and maintains strong momentum for continued improvements,” says Alex Kuiper, representative. “We’re proud of what we achieved together at the bargaining table.” McCann Redi-Mix, based in Dashwood, Ontario, is a family-owned construction materials and services company specializing in ready-mix concrete, aggregate supply, paving, and excavation work.
