Local Updates

Local 6

The local is excited to welcome new members employed by Airon Group of Companies, an advanced HVAC and building automation systems service and installation company based out of Burlington; All-Pro Installations Ltd., a leading door, hardware, and trim installation firm based out of Hamilton; and UrbanLink Civil Ltd., a construction management and general contracting services firm based out of Grimsby. Members employed by the three companies have all ratified their first collective agreement.

Local 6 staff are busy negotiating renewal collective agreements with Low’s Glass and Mirror Co. Ltd. and Sand-Mark Sheet Metal Limited. Settlements have been achieved for members employed by Besseling Mechanical Inc., Group 92 Mechanical Inc., Halton Sheet Metal Ltd., the Independent Contractors Association (Demik Construction Company Ltd., Schilthuis Construction Inc., G.S. Wark Limited, O’Connor Electric, and STF Construction Ltd.), Mechanical Drywall Systems Ltd., and Trans Test Ltd.

Brent Smith was the Local 6 delegate for the CLAC National Convention, held virtually on October 8, 2020. The local board cancelled the 2020 annual general meeting and golf tournament due to the pandemic and have extended all board positions for another year.

Local 52

The board met on June 25, July 22, September 24, and December 3. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these meetings were held virtually. At the December meeting, the board welcomed Jeff Pickles who will be completing the term vacated by Donny Crowe, who retired from the board. Jeff is employed by DSK Electric Inc. John Schenk was Local 52’s representative at the CLAC National Convention, held virtually on October 8, 2020.

Local 52 is pleased to welcome new members employed at Full Circle Materials Ltd., Labonte Concrete Ltd., and Santos Construction Solutions Ltd. to the local. Local staff continue negotiations for B-Safe Electric Ltd., C.E.C. Services Ltd., Dependable Mechanical Systems Inc., Onyx Electrical Services Inc., Rock Electric Inc., Santos Construction Solutions Ltd., and STRABAG Inc. They also report on ratified settlements on behalf of 23 groups that the local has the privilege to represent.

Local 53

The board has continued to oversee the business of the local despite the COVID-19 pandemic and public health regulations. The board met virtually on April 30 and in person with physical distancing measures on September 17. Due to the limitations involved, the board determined it wisest to not host an annual general meeting in the summer.

The local reached a milestone with record membership during 2020 cresting over 1,500 members working during the summer months. Enrolment increased not only from newly organized workplaces, but also due to significant growth in employment in many long-standing Local 53 workplaces.

Newest members to Local 53 are welcomed from Lor-Don Electric Ltd. in London, Taylor Electric Inc. in Belle River, and Young Electrical Services Ltd. in Windsor. Several collective agreements have been renewed over the year.

President Harold Chordash served the membership as the Local 53 delegate to the CLAC National Convention, held virtually on October 8, 2020.
