Local 6 Update

Local 6 staff are busy negotiating renewal collective agreements for members employed by Besseling Mechanical Inc., G.S. Sheet Metal, Group 92 Mechanical Inc., Halton Sheet Metal Ltd., Independent Contractors Association, Low’s Glass & Mirror Co. Ltd., O’Connor Electric, Trans Test Ltd., and Urbanlink Civil Ltd. The local is pleased to have recently renewed a collective agreement with Niagara Formwork Structures Inc. and a first collective agreement with SFB Plumbing and Heating.

The local is pleased to welcome new members employed by D.A. Drywall 2017 Inc., a Hamilton-based drywall contractor. Local 6 also welcomes members working at Ontario Redi-Mix who voted in favour of transferring into the local.

The Local 6 Board met for a Christmas dinner in December and on February 15 to discuss the ongoing activities of the local such as negotiations, ratifications, organizing, labour board cases, and training. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be in April 2023. The Local is planning the annual general meeting and golf tournament to be held in June.

The board and Local 6 work community also mourns the passing of long-standing member and former board president Nick De Gelder. See page 6 for more about Nick.

Local 52

The Local 52 Board met most recently in March. Local staff continue negotiations for approximately 16 companies represented out of the Mississauga, Cambridge, and Sudbury Member Centres.

Local staff reported on a significant number of settlements that have been achieved for the members of the local that have been ratified. The board also updated on each of the special cases and organizing initiatives that local staff are involved in. The board also reviewed the local’s financials along with training opportunities available to members. This meeting was combined with the local’s annual general meeting.

Local 53

The Local 53 Board held a first quarter winter meeting for 2023 on January 20. The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled as the second quarter spring meeting on April 29.

New board member Sean Clemens was welcomed to his first regular board meeting following his election to the board at the local’s annual general meeting held in October 2022. The board determined executive positions for 2023, reconfirming each of the serving executive members without change.

CLAC staff based at the Chatham and Cambridge Member Centres continue to guide a busy spring of collective agreement renewals and first collective agreements for newly organized groups. Renewed collective agreements were reached with J.M.R. Electric Ltd., Johnson Electric Inc., Sierra Group of Companies, and VanRooyen Earthmoving Ltd. First settlements with new workplaces were reached at Pro Trades Mechanical Inc. and Trade Tech Mechanical Services Inc. Negotiations for a first agreement with Neighbourhood Electric remain ongoing.

Negotiations are scheduled at nine other workplaces before the end of June. Heading into 2023, Local 53 membership continued at an all-time high, averaging nearly 1,600 members employed at 47 workplaces across southwestern Ontario.

The board has tentatively scheduled the month of June to host the 2023 annual general meeting. Finalized meeting details will be circulated nearer the actual date.
