Local Updates

Local 6

Local 6 staff have been negotiating renewal collective agreements, and recent settlements have been achieved for members employed by Cross Country Concrete Ontario Ltd., Direct Electric Corporation, Gosen Electric Limited, PRL Guite Electric Ltd., Umbrella Electric, and VanMar Constructors ON Inc. The local is preparing for a very busy spring as many more collective agreements are up for renewal.

The local is pleased to welcome new members working at SFB Plumbing and Heating, a Hamilton-based mechanical contractor. The local also welcomes members working at Dufferin Hamilton and Dufferin Beamsville who voted in favour of transferring from CLAC direct into Local 6.

The Local 6 Board met on September 21 and November 16 to discuss the ongoing activities of the local such as negotiations, ratifications, organizing, labour board cases, and training. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be in February 2023.

Local 52

The local board met on November 10, 2022, and approved Luis Silva (Montana Electrical Contractors Ltd.), Jeffrey Da Cruz (Chandos Construction) and Christian Cummings (Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd.) to serve on the board.

Local staff continue negotiations for approximately 14 employers represented out of the Mississauga, Cambridge, and Sudbury Member Centres: AW High Voltage Contracting Ltd. (wage opener), Borea Construction ULC, CEC Mechanical Ltd., Corrcoat Services Inc., Dominion Construction, Fournier Construction & Excavation Incorporated, Frisoni Mechanical Inc., Kile Contracting Inc., MCA Contracting Ltd., MX Constructors, Newcon Electric Inc., Ridgeline Electric Inc., Rumble Electric Co. Ltd., and Tor-Crete Ltd.

Local staff also reported on 17 collective agreement settlements that were ratified: Ayat Contracting Inc., Caron Equipment Inc., Denis Gratton Construction Ltd., Elec-tergrity Inc. (Stratz Electric), Foers Pressure Inc., Industrial Floor Systems Corp., Koler Construction, Mapleridge Mechanical Contracting Inc., MIC Mechanical Contracting Ltd., Nuna Logistics Limited, Penalta Group Ltd., Premier Electrical Contractors Inc., Pro Pipe Construction Inc. (Dalcon), Synapse Electric Limited, Topline Electric Limited, Twiss Electric Ltd., and Wilkinson Construction Services Inc.

The board was also updated on special cases and organizing initiatives that local staff are involved in. The board also approved the local’s audited financial statement. The board will set a date for its next meeting and the annual general meeting early in the new year.

Local 53

Local staff are focused and busy with negotiating new or renewed collective agreements for a number of companies represented out of the Chatham and Cambridge Member Centres. With Local 53 membership now exceeding 1,600 at nearly 50 construction workplaces, the local and representatives are preparing for a very busy winter and spring 2023 of contract renewal work. Settlements for new collective agreements have recently been achieved and ratified by members employed by Anchor Hydro, Collaborative Structures Limited (CSL), Dean Lane Contractors, Empire Roofing Corporation, Glenile Services, Taylor Electric Inc., and Young Electrical Services Ltd.

The local is pleased to welcome new members employed by Trade Tech Mechanical Services Inc. (St. Thomas), Pro-Trades Mechanical Inc. (Windsor), and Neighbourhood Electric (Windsor and Kitchener). To address growth in membership and workplaces, the Local 53 Board was pleased to authorize Mary Ellen Alward, a representative working from the Chatham Member Centre, to conduct business affairs on behalf of the local and membership. And finally, the board welcomed member Sean Clemons (Liftsafe Engineering & Service Group) as newly elected to serve on the board.

The board met on October 19 at the annual general meeting along with a subsequent regular board meeting. The board discusses and provides oversight for the ongoing activities of the local including such matters as collective agreement negotiations, settlement ratifications, organizing of employees at new workplaces, labour board cases, and assessing member sponsorship requests.
