Local 53

The Local 53 Board regularly meets quarterly, having convened on October 20th for the annual general meeting (AGM) and a regular board meeting. The board will next meet in the first quarter of 2024.

The AGM agenda included reporting of the 2022 financial statement prepared by BDO Dunwoody, a report on the local’s activity, and elections for positions on the Local 53 Board.

Harold Chordash and Sean Clemens were appointed by the board as delegates to represent the local at the CLAC National Convention held December 6-8 in Lake Louise, Alberta.

Local 53 representatives based at the Chatham and Cambridge Member Centres continue to guide a busy year of collective agreement renewals and first collective agreements. Welcome is extended to the newest members of Local 53 from Arcon Electric Ltd., based in London.

Leading into 2024, Local 53’s membership total continues to exceed previous annual records, now averaging nearly 1,700 members employed at 49 different construction workplaces across southwestern Ontario.

Thank You, Harold and Sheila!

Two long-serving and prominent members of the board, Harold Chordash and Sheila Davis, have chosen to step down from their positions.

Harold was elected to the board in 2009 and served as secretary in 2012, vice-president in 2014, and president in 2016. He also served as a trustee on the CLAC Eastern and Western Health and Welfare Plan for about 15 years and retired from that role a few years ago. He’s served as union steward for multiple terms and on the bargaining committee for several collective agreement renewals. He retired from the board following his delegated attendance at the National Convention in Lake Louise, Alberta. He is still actively employed at Graceview Enterprises Inc. and hopes to continue with work for a while yet.

Sheila served on the board for the past eight years. In the past three years, she has served as the vice-president. She recently retired from employment at VanRooyen Earthmoving Ltd.

The local extends its gratitude to both Harold and Sheila for their dedication and diligence over the years on behalf of the membership. The board welcomes Miranda VanRooyen as newly elected to a position on the board.
