Settlements have been achieved for members employed by M.W. Coating Systems Ltd. and Mechanical Drywall Systems Ltd. The local is pleased to welcome new members employed by PRL-Guite Electric Limited, a Stoney Creek-based electrical contractor, and two new representatives, Ben Hirst and Matt Barrett. The board welcomed new members Jane Penchion (Wallwin Electric Services Limited) and Jacqueline Myers (North Frontenac Telephone Haliburton Corp.) and is pleased that they have joined us. Local staff continue negotiations for 13 Local 52-represented companies out of the Mississauga, Cambridge, and Sudbury Member Centres: A&W High Voltage Contracting Ltd., Caron Equipment Inc., Cynergy Mechnical Ltd., Foers Pressure Inc., JAC Mechanical Inc., Ledcor Construction Limited, MX Constructors, Northec Construction Inc., Percon Construction Inc., Pre-Eng Contracting Ltd., Rico Lighting & Electrical Services, and Upper Canada Glass. Local staff also reported on eight collective agreement settlements that were ratified for members employed by DeFran Electric Inc., In2Deep Ltd., Ironclad Developments, Inc./Full Throttle Concrete Ltd., Kingdom Construction Ltd., Mortlock Construction Inc., P.H. E. Contractor Sales Ltd., PSE Services, and Wallwin Electric Services Limited. The board received an update on local training initiatives and courses as well as an update on the local’s finances. The local has enjoyed steady growth as new groups join or existing companies expand. We will be booking a virtual annual general meeting (AGM) in the next couple of months. Landon Teel, Member at Large (B&J Contracting) Local 53 The Local 53 Board met virtually for the first quarter winter meeting for 2022 on January 19. The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled as the second quarter spring meeting on April 20. New board member Larry Mote was welcomed to his first regular board meeting following his election to the board at the 2021 annual general meeting held virtually on October 25, 2021. The board determined executive positions for 2022, reconfirming each of the serving executive members reappointed without change. CLAC staff continue to guide a busy spring of collective agreement renewals and first collective agreements for newly organized groups. These include negotiations with Anchor Hydro, CIMCO, D. Grant Construction Limited, Empire Roofing Corporation, Glenile Services, Gordon Ruth and Company Ltd., Hardie Industrial Services Inc. (new), KS Zyp Ltd., Liftsafe Engineering & Service Group, Poirier Electric Ltd., Rose City Electric, and Vozza Contracting - 911904 Ontario Ltd. New settlements reached early in 2022 include Dean Lane Contractors, Fortress Concrete Forming Inc., and Wilhelm Concrete (new). Heading into 2022, Local 53 membership continues a pattern of yearly growth, with an average of nearly 1,500 members working at 47 workplaces across southwestern Ontario. The board has scheduled the month of June to host the 2022 annual general meeting. Finalized meeting details will be circulated nearer the actual date.
