Local 6

Local 6 staff are busy negotiating renewal collective agreements with Boonstra’s One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, Brant County Concrete Ltd., Complete Comfort Niagara Inc., Jerry’s Auto Body Inc., Jim’s Concrete, M.W. Coating Systems Ltd., and Mechanical Drywall Systems Ltd.

Settlements have been achieved for members employed by Losani Homes and Randen Electrical Systems.

The Local is pleased to welcome new members employed by Zehr Levesque Inc., a Kitchener-based Real Estate Development and Construction company.

The Local 6 golf tournament and annual general meeting was held on October 2, 2021, at the Monthill Golf & Country Club. The board welcomed two new members, Sean Belzner and Cam Beldman, both employed by Schilthuis Construction Inc.

Local 52

The Local 52 Board met on October 7, 2021. The board enjoyed its first face-to-face meeting since the pandemic began, which was a nice opportunity for everyone. Local staff continue negotiations for approximately 10 bargaining units represented out of the Mississauga, Cambridge, and Sudbury Member Centres. Local staff also reported on 10 collective agreement settlements that were ratified. They were Brampton Brick Limited, Can-Am Pipe Works Ltd., Dael Thermal Group Inc., Global Fire Protection Ltd., Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd., Montana Electrical Contractors Ltd., Royal Ready Construction Ltd., Santos Construction Solutions Ltd., Wallwin Voice & Data Ltd., and ZSD Electric Inc. The board received an update on ongoing training initiatives and courses as well as an update on the local’s finances. We look forward to having a virtual annual general meeting in 2022.

Local 53

The Local 53 Board hosted its annual general meeting online on October 25, 2021. Connie Liu, a CLAC staff member for the CLAC Pension Plan, was a featured presenter, providing an informative and detailed report on the functioning of the plan as well as the newly implemented investment glide path. A report on Local 53 business and activity during 2021 followed, with a strong forecast for activity and growth into 2022. The Local 53 Financial Statement for 2020, prepared by BDO Dunwoody, was presented as well. Newly elected to a position on the board is Larry Mote, who is employed by J.M.R. Electric Inc. Welcomed to renewed terms on the board are Harold Chordash (Graceview Enterprises Inc.), Dennis Preszcator (J.M.R. Electric Inc.), and Brad Mead (Pro Electric Inc.).

Slow and steady growth in Local 53 membership again dominated 2021 as recorded membership numbers continue to nudge past record levels. The local now encompasses nearly 1,600 members employed by 46 contractors across the southwestern Ontario region.

The local board meets quarterly to deal with financial and business oversight of matters across these workplaces. The next scheduled regular board meeting will be in January 2022.
