Locals Local 6 Local 52 Local 53 Newsletters Ontario Construction

Local 6

Local 6 staff are busy negotiating renewal collective agreements with DeGrandis Concrete Pumping, Losani Homes, and Randen Electrical Systems. The Local welcomes new members working at Aquaflow Plumbing & Heating Service, a mechanical contractor based in Beamsville. The membership has ratified their first collective agreement.

Settlements have been achieved for members employed by BCR Electric Limited, Cambridge Concrete Ltd. – Pumping, Cirrus Management Contracting Ltd., G.S. Sheet Metal, Horizon Concrete Construction Ltd., O’Brien Fabrications Ltd., Provincial Construction Limited, Rankin Construction Inc., Sand-Mark Sheet Metal Limited, Sundial Homes (Burl 7) Limited, and Viewcon Construction Ltd.

The Local 6 Board met virtually on April 21, June 16, and September 15. The Local 6 Golf Tournament and annual general meeting is scheduled for October 2 at Monthill Golf & Country Club in Caledonia. The board is seeking nominations for two vacancies.

Local 52

The board met on March 25 and June 3. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these meetings were held virtually, but the board and staff look forward to face-to-face meetings when that becomes possible again. Local 52 is pleased to welcome the employees of DeFran Electric Inc., J&S Mechanical Incorporated, Muskoka’s Power Professionals Inc., and ZSD Electric Inc. into the local.

Local staff continue negotiations for approximately 18 companies. Settlements were ratified recently for members employed by B&J Contracting, City Electric Inc., DSK Electric Inc., J&S Mechanical Incorporated, Jasper Constructors Ltd., Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd., Matheson Constructors Limited, Muskoka’s Power Professionals Inc., North Frontenac Telephone Haliburton Corp., Platinum Power Group Inc., Rock Electric Inc., Romag Contracting Ltd., and Upper Canada Glass. The board received an update on training courses and ongoing initiatives and as well as an update on the local’s finances.

Local 53

The Local 53 Board meets quarterly for regular business meetings. We were able to do so virtually throughout 2021. Most recently, the board hosted the annual general meeting in London on September 28. The Local 53 membership was invited to hear a report on the past year as well as to review the 2020 financial statement of the local. A presentation on the CLAC Pension Plan was also a key part of the evening.

As of the time of this report, the growing membership in the local is tracking at nearly 1,600 persons—another all-time high. Along with several new workplaces joining Local 53, many of the 43 Local 53 workplaces have hired additional persons throughout 2021. A warm welcome to local’s newest members employed by Wilhelm Concrete, based in Stratford, who joined in late summer. Work volumes remain steady and high for most Local 53 members across the southwestern region.
