J.M.R. Electric Employees Secure Significant Wage Increases, Other Improvements

Exeter, ON—Employees of J.M.R. Electric Ltd., based in Exeter, ratified a three-year collective agreement securing significant wage increases and many other improvements.

The company’s 300 plumbers, sheet metal workers, electricians, and labourers are represented by Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 53. The union has represented them since 2007.

The new contract provides a 15.5 percent wage increase ($6 per hour) over the term. Other improvements include a 0.25 percent increase to employer contributions to employees’ pension plan, foreperson and lead-hand premiums move from a dollar amount to a premium so they will increase each year, and an increase in the daily food allowance. In addition, the employer will now cover costs for lanyards and harnesses, and weekly overtime pay will now begin after 42 hours instead of 44.

“The union bargaining committee had a difficult task in working to negotiate a fair settlement that met the membership’s needs during these uncertain times,” says James Koopman, CLAC representative. “They did a fantastic job representing the member’s interests to management. We’re happy that we could negotiate an agreement that the majority of members could get behind.”

J.M.R. Electric is a full-service electrical and mechanical contractor working in the ICI construction sector (industrial, commercial, and institutional), including the construction of high-rise residential buildings, hospitals, schools, and retirement homes. The company is currently working on projects in Chalk River, Ottawa, Kingston, Fort Erie, Cambridge, London, Sudbury, and Chatham.
