Monday, March 6, 2023 In Memoriam: Nick De Gelder The CLAC community has lost a long time faithful member and calm leader. Nick De Gelder passed away on the second last day of 2022. Locals Local 6 Newsletters Ontario Construction For over 35 years, Nick was a member of Construction Workers Union, CLAC Local 6. He served as president of its board for 20 of those years. Gary Star, who served on the board with him, remembers Nick as a thoughtful, soft-spoken leader. He was wise in dealing with issues. He spoke a calming word into the bargaining process when those came around every few years. Local 6 members worked in many different trades and negotiations with the Independent Contractors Association out of Hamilton could sometimes get heated. Nick was a licensed carpenter and was a foreman or superintendent on many job sites. He was deeply respected for his skill and integrity. He was a straight shooter. A kind and gentle person, Nick always had the best in mind for others. On one occasion, he got together a crew to build a ramp for a member’s wife who had lost her mobility. He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Tineke, sons Henry, Gerrard, and Clinton, and many grandchildren. In tribute to Nick’s character, his obituary read that in lieu of flowers, folks were asked to give their loved ones a special hug.
