Helpful Tips for Finishing Your Ontario Apprenticeship

Once you have finished all the stages of your apprenticeship involving your on-the-job and in-school training, it is time to complete your apprenticeship program through Skilled Trades Ontario. If this is you, then congratulations on reaching this milestone!

There are now four important steps to follow:

  1. Verify that your records are complete. Make sure your sponsor is informed of your intention to complete your program and that all your records are up to date—this includes your Logbook!
  2. Fill out, sign, and submit your Apprenticeship Completion Form. Download the Apprenticeship Completion Form. Ensure both you and your sponsor sign the form before you submit it to STO via email or mail. Submission instructions can be found on the form.
  3. Skilled Trades Ontario will review the form. A representative from STO will review the form to verify your apprenticeship program completion.
  4. Receive your Certificate of Apprenticeship. When your apprenticeship program completion is confirmed, Skilled Trades Ontario will send you your Certificate of Apprenticeship in the mail.

Important Facts to Remember

  • Only a Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by Skilled Trades Ontario confirms that you have completed all requirements of your apprenticeship program.
  • If your trade does not have a certifying exam, then you just need to follow the four steps listed above.
  • If your trade has a certifying exam, Skilled Trades Ontario will provide you with a Provisional Certificate of Qualification.
  • This certificate is valid for only one year to give you time to write the C of Q exam.
  • For compulsory trades, this certificate allows you to keep working while you wait to write your exam.
