Help Others Find Their Voice with CLAC

Because every healthcare worker deserves protection, respect, and fair compensation

By Kevin Gates, Representative, Mississauga Member Centre

As a healthcare worker, you know how important your job is to your patients, clients, or residents and the difference you make every time you report to work. You also know how impossibly difficult working in healthcare can be—working short, dealing with unreasonable supervisors, coping with disrespect and verbal aggression, being overworked and torn in a thousand different directions at once.

Working in healthcare can be difficult, demanding, and sometimes even dangerous. We can’t imagine doing the work that you do without the protection and support of a union.

CLAC is proud to represent you and the work that you do. We strive every day to make your workplace better. We know full well that we can’t fix everything in your workplace but, like you, we keep showing up and doing our very best to defend your rights and advocate for your interests.

The trouble is that not every healthcare worker benefits from the protection of a union. According to Statistics Canada, only 53.8 percent of healthcare workers in Ontario are unionized. That means that there are thousands of healthcare workers across the province who go to work without the protection and support that CLAC can provide.

CLAC is on a mission to help workers across the country experience the benefits of being unionized with Canada’s fastest growing independent union. Unionizing with CLAC can help to provide workers with protection against unfair treatment, create fairness in their workplace by eliminating favoritism and unjust treatment, and secure improved compensation through higher wages.

It’s been our experience that most nonunion employees are unaware of their right to unionize and are afraid of repercussions or losing their job if they try to organize their workplace. As a CLAC member you know that is not true. You know that you have the right to unionize by law under the Ontario Labour Relations Act.

With that knowledge, you have the ability to make someone’s workplace better and safer.

Nearly 100 percent of CLAC’s growth has been from referrals from members who had a positive experience with CLAC. You can help to make someone’s workplace better by being intentional about talking to people about us and connecting them with your CLAC representative.

Healthcare workers need to know that they have the right to unionize without fear of losing anything. The absolute best way to help someone overcome their fear is by sharing your first-hand knowledge and experience.
